Technical Literacy

We are all members of a global society, and because of technology, the lives of everyone on this planet are highly interconnected. More so than ever before, Nations must work together to solve global problems as they arise - we need to work across borders, across oceans, and across cultures! Because technology is everywhere and a part of everything we do, it shapes how our society evolves, and where it will evolve to. And so, to be a contributing member of society, everyone needs to be technically literate at least at some level. This includes our policy makers and leaders so that they can make good decisions about engineering and technology issues that affect everyone's lives. How do we do this? How do we instill technical literacy into the general population? Furthermore, how do we reach out to and attract groups of students that are currently under-represented in technology and engineering programs? The presentation will cover a few practical approaches through which this can be accomplished. Some of the ideas to be discussed are quite innovative, especially considering how most engineering and technology educational programs are currently taught at the college level. I believe that the audience members will be inspired to act on the ideas presented, wherever they live, thereby helping to further the ideal of technological engagement of all members of society, at all levels.
